We (Don’t) Like Sports

What is up with guys and sports? Cupcake is an addict and sports is his addiction – it’s worse than crack! He’s constantly checking up on sports via his blackberry, the newspaper, the internets, the television, and by calling these strange 976 numbers! I don’t get it! I mean sports are OK, but it gets sorta boring after awhile. The only other guy I have known that’s as addicted to sports as Cupcake is my brother, Grundle. However, Grundle is the White Trash Sports Lover while Cupcake is the Frat Boy Sports Lover. I think there are a few different “leagues” of sports lovers:

1) The White Trash Sports Lover loves WWE, Nascar, and hockey.

2) The Hippie Sports Lover loves fly-fishing, ultimate frisbee, and soccer.

3) The Hipster Sports Lover loves curling, bowling, and the luge.

4) The Frat Boy/Sorority Girl (but she’s faking it – no pun intended) Sports Lover loves FOOTBALL!, baseball, and basketball.

5) The Upper Class Sports Lover loves tennis, golf, and croquet.

6) The Female/Lesbian Sports Lover loves ice skating, gymnastics, and WNBA.

I am none of the above. I will watch sports sometimes if I am really bored or there are drinks/treats involved. I would much rather watch Law and Order: SVU or I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant.

  • I can’t stand watching sports. It always amazed me how people could watch extremely repetitive motions when a highlight reel is always created once it’s over. I think a large part of it is that it’s just a very socially acceptable drinking passtime that 90% of other guys engage in. Sort of like a way to fit in easily that involves zero effort. Nerds, alpha males, and even a large number of women these days seem to be “into” sports these days. It’s something anyone can be into without having to “qualify”.

  • I am 7) The Euro trash wannabe sports-lover who loves soccer (but insists on calling it “FOOTBALL!!” or worse, futbol, or worstest, footie) and European motor racing (Formula 1, MotoGP, World Rally, etc). You must look on NASCAR with disdain, even though it is way less boring and attracts pretty much the same element.

    (Although I don’t like soccer)
